Al Webber turns 100
The oldest IOTA member is still going strong in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania
New: 2007 Oct. 31, 20h UT
Al Webber was just days before his 99th birthday when he drove by himself from his home in Chadds Ford, Penn. to Mt. Cuba Observatory in nearby northern Delaware to attend the 2006 IOTA meeting). Richard Nugent took this picture of Al with Cliff Bader at the meeting. Al has timed lunar occultations since at least the mid- 1960's when he participated in several of the early grazing occultation expeditions organized by the U. S. Naval Observatory, but he had not formally joined IOTA until the 2006 meeting. He had to leave the IOTA meeting shortly before it ended "so he could get home in time to fix dinner for his 70-year-old sons". Now it's a year later, and earlier this month, Al celebrated his 100th birthday. A surprize party was held 5 days before the big day at lunch at a nearby restaurant; soon here will be a picture of surprized Al at that event, and Cliff Bader also provided the following 3-megabyte scanned image of the local newspaper article about the event. _____________________________ David Dunham, dunham@starpower.net, 301-474-4722, cell 301-526-5590 Office david.dunham@jhuapl.edu phone 240-228-5609
