Joe,
Here's another Regulus graze expedition.  I'll set up a page on my Web site to keep track of these and later developments, it'll be at http://iota.jhuapl.edu/reg07n03.htm .

David,

Wow! The path is almost in my back yard! If you look at Columbia TN on the Gogle map link you sent me, I live on the South side of Columbia just a tad north of Pulaski ( http://www.fingerlakessynthetics.com/occultations/ZC1487_2007_Nov__3.htm ). I am going to aim a tad West for Lawerenceburg near Davey Crocket Park. I'll throw that out there for anyone who wants to drive to Tennessee. You are more than welcome to stay at my place Friday night or Saturday if need be.

I did order the "Y" adapter from PFD figuring it would be a very handy minor cost. I'll look into that Universal 12 volt you mentioned since I have the time. What do you personally use for a VCR?

You can power the Kiwi and PC23C with two 9-volt transistor batteries and small TAB adaptors (from Supercircuits for less than $2 apiece), but I'd trust them for only 20 min. to half an hour, but that's enough if you're just doing a graze with one setup by yourself.  I usually use the approximately 2-pound
Universal 12-volt batteries from Supercircuits, although they're a little expensive, $69 for two of them the last I bought them a couple of years ago.  One of those will power both the Kiwi and the PC23C (need a Y power adaptor that you can get from PFD Systems) for hours.  But what you have is probably good enough.

David,

Many many thanks for the quick response! I just got confirmation that my KIWI is now in the mail. I also have ordered an older model miniDV camcorder (JVC GR 290U) that accepts composite video input, thus I can use it as my VCR. Now I am completely power line independent and have a 1 pound video setup (not counting the lawn and garden battery for the  KIWI and PC23C)! That camcorder should arrive in a week or so. This will allow me to record the event digitally and be able to download it strait from digital tape to digital computer via USB (or firewire) for image processing to create a light curve of the event.

Now I just have to get on the links you just sent to find where I want to plop my 1 pound video setup....

Thanks! It's great to be somewhat back doing what I used to really enjoy!

For joining IOTA, yes, it's Chad, the 1st Cc: address.  You can get the current Occult program from
http://www.lunar-occultations.com/iota/occult3.htm .  Brad Timerson has already set up an interactive Google Maps page for the Regulus graze so you can zoom in on maps and satellite or aerial imagery in rather great detail at http://www.fingerlakessynthetics.com/occultations/GrazeMaps.html - the Regulus graze is at the bottom, click on "ZC 1487 (Regulus)".  Path coordinates and profiles for different longitudes are also there.  The path shifts south perpendicular to itself by 2.1 times the height above sea level; you can use that and the profile to estimate the distances (in km) for the gray offset lines to define the graze zone.  Brad Timerson, who set up that Web site, can help, the 2nd Cc: address.  Good luck,

David

Bob/David,

OK, here's the scoop from my area. I am officially expressing interest in participating in the Regulus event. Here's the problem. I am about a decade out of date on prediction methods! I lost my last version of Occult in a computer crash about 3 computers ago. I have a KIWI on order. I am going to sturdy up my 6" mount which is already equitorially motor driven, so I am set on observing equipment. But I don't know the best way to acquire observing long/lat data. I still have my version of Street Atlas that will take long/lat files and display them against streets, so I can plot my own path if I have the right data. Can either of you tell me what the latest/best program I need to acquire that I can use to generate a longitude/lattitude table for the graze path along I-65 in (I am assuming) Alabama? I live only 5 miles from I-65, so I have easy access to driving south to near the graze limit. Atlanta is just too far for me when I can probably reach the graze limit in a few hours from Columbia, TN by going to Alabama.

I also need to renew my membership so that I am a paying IOTA member. Can you send me the email of whom to contact for that. Is that Chad? Any help you can give me to get me kick started again will be GREATLY appreciated!

might try it in Georgia farther east.  I'm copying this to the
IOTAoccultations e-list to see if any others along the path from
southern Oregon (near Klamath Falls) to near Savannah, GA might
be  planning an expedition for this graze.
