Predictions for the 2000 Dec. 25th Partial Solar Eclipse
IMPORTANT Update: 2000 Dec. 22The best local predictions that can be obtained for any location are now available in the partial solar eclipse section of http://www.heavens-above.com. The predictions of the contacts given there are now to the nearest second, although the actual contacts will be a few to several seconds different since their site assumes a spherical Moon, not taking into account the lunar profile. The site has coordinates for over 2 million cities, or you can specify your coordinates for the on-line calculation. They effectively supersede much that is said below, but the definitions below have been CORRECTED here, so they are useful. The heavens-above site gives some views of the eclipse, at 30-min. intervals, that help visualize the eclipse. But that site does not give the vertex and position angles of the contacts, which are ONLY listed here, as far as I know. The predictions in the large table below this descriptive text, provided by Roger Sinnott at Sky Publishing Corp., gives the times and circumstances, including the location around the Sun's limb, of the first and last contacts for hundreds of North American cities. As far as I know, this is the only Web site that gives detailed contact location predictions. However, the times are given only to the nearest minute, while video observers will want more accurate times of the contacts. These can be found in Fred Espenak's information about this eclipse. In the third paragraph of his page is a link to a global view of the eclipse, as well as a more detailed view of North America showing well the percent coverage at maximum eclipse. Under his fifth paragraph, under a diagram for the eclipse for Washington, DC, are links to three tables of predictions for hundreds of cities, "Partial Eclipse from the USA!", "Partial Eclipse from the (sic) Canada!", and "Partial Eclipse from Mexico, Central America, & Caribbean!". These tables also give the contact times only to the nearest minute, but if you click on the city name, you get a diagram and a small table that gives the contact times to the nearest second. Also interesting are the annimated views of the eclipse on a map at SkyPub's Web site. It shows the progress of the eclipse for several North American cities.
