European occ'n by Nephthys & possible satellite tonight
New: 2003 April 28Tonight, April 28, the 9.1-mag. spectral type K0 star SAO 79969 = TYC 1385-0019-1 will be occulted by the 70-km S-class asteroid asteroid (287) Nephthys along a path just missing Ireland and England to the southwest at 21:30 U.T., then passing over northwestern and east-central France, Geneva, northern Italy (Milan at n. limit, Turin at s. limit), Albania (at 21:31 UT), central Greece, s.w. Turkey, Cyprus, and Syria. There is much interest in this event because the asteroid probably has a nearby satellite, and a large effort is already underway to coordinate observations of this event. This message, giving detailed station data with closest approach times and distances for hundreds of European and some Middle-Eastern stations, is meant to help that coordination. Some of the information immediately below is not new to the Planoccult mailing list, but this is being sent to several who may not be on that list. Farther below is the station data, new for everyone. Information about the possible satellite, and detailed maps of the path, and the occultation uncertainty zone, can be found at Eric Frappa's Web site. Detailed finder charts and path predictions can be found at the Czech asteroidal occultation Web site. Unfortunately, the latest weather forecast is for mostly cloudy conditions across virtually all of Europe in and near the path, but Francois Colas informs us that it will probably be clear, or mostly so, in the Chamonix Valley south of Mount Blanc, so he and some other observers from Paris have travelled there, and hope to set up at least 3 mobile observing stations. The star is at J2000 R.A. 8h 08m 11.7s, Dec. +20 deg. 33' 46", about a degree south of mu Cancri and near the Gemini border. ________________________________________________ Stations for the Nephthys occultation of 2003 April 28 Below is a list of observer stations sorted by distance from Jan Manek's updated central line. Distances are given in km measured perpendicularly from the central line. The time gives the updated time (U.T. of March 1) of closest approach, when the occultation should occur, within an accuracy of about +/-0.2 minute, at the location. You need to monitor the star for an occultation within a four-minute period centered on the time of closest approach for your location (to check for occultations by possible satellites of Nephthys). You can search for your name name with a word processor to find your time and distance from the predicted central line. If your station is not in the list, send me the coordinates of the place where you plan to observe and I'll add that station for a later message. Let me know if you plan to monitor the star for an occultation, and I will send out a new version of this list with your track marked as occupied. This will help for positioning mobile observers. I will put items in the "C" (code) column, to indicate commitments to observe from fixed sites and weather probabilities, after I have heard from several of you. BUT ** the logistics of doing that may be difficult. Maybe someone in Europe should do it, since tonight we have our own asteroidal occultation of a 9th-mag. star going right over Maryland, and it's beautifully clear, so I'll be busy from now until about 7h UT of April 28th with that event. My last chance to mail generally an update will be about 14h UT of April 28, just before I will go to my office - after that, use my Cc: address, david.dunham@jhuapl.edu for any further calculations. ______________________________________________ NOTE: The table needs to be displayed and/or printed with a fixed- space font such as Courier for the columns to line up properly. In the e-mail message, the lines are long enough that some (or many) of the lines will wrap; I will send a .txt (plain ASCII text) version of this to Rob Robinson so that he can place it on the main IOTA Web site at http://www.lunar-occultations.com/iota . As can be seen from the list, observers some distance from the path have a chance to see the occultation, and observers at least within the +/-1-sigma range (distance 126 km N. to 126 km S.) are strongly encouraged to attempt observation; observations to the +/-2-sigma range (207 km N. to 207 km S.) also have some, but less, chance. But for the satellite, observation within +/-500 km is wanted, a much larger range. Under C, * will be a committed fixed-site observer, V = * with video, and m = tentative location for mobile observer, and M = tentative location for mobile video observer. The station list is mainly made from all of the stations on Eric Frappa's Web site from which any (including negative) observations are given for 2002 and 2003, and also from the list of all observed asteroidal occultations (and Titania and Tethys) to mid-2002 (but including Tercidina) prepared by D. Herald. I have removed exact duplicates. Herald's version is preferred since he includes (usually) location/observatory names while Frappa only gives the country and observer. Under "city/town" below, from Frappa's list, is given the country code and telescope information, then the method, then the date of the (usually last) observation, then the observer's name. From Herald's list, the date of the (usually) last observation, then the observer's name (with a blank space after 8 characters) and location, are given. The date is given as yyyymmdd (with break between yyyy and mmdd for stations from Frappa's list). In the course of preparing this list, some errors in the observation lists were found, but they will have to be sorted out later - if you find any errors below, let me know. Dist. U.T. W.Long.
