Occ'n of 9.5-mag. star by 1707 Chantal this evening
We need your help to cover the path that extends from near Albany, NY, across e. Penn., central Maryland, Baltimore - DC region, Virginia, & Carolinas - the weather is very nice and clear
New: 2006 January 12
Three messages are below, starting with the most recent. If it doesn't make sense to you, read the other two, especially the last one that has most of the information. Sorry, I don't have time now to make hot links to most of the Web sites mentioned; I'll try to do that later, but might not be able to. But click here for the updated power point file with the full-sky views, and I copy part of another link that does have some hot links to the main Web sites mentioned below, at the end. _________________________________________ The latest Astro Meteo weather forecast is very similar to the last one - continues to look good in the Mid-Atlantic states. I have an extra telescope and two extra video systems that might be borrowed, if interested you have to get them at my office, or west of there after I leave, phone 240-228-5609 or cell 301-526-5590. If you live in western Howard County, I plan to observe there and am looking for good locations within 3 miles of MD Route 32 (s. of I- 70) or within 3 miles of I-70 between Frederick and Route 32 - let me know if I might be able to set up one of my remote setups at your home. In the list below, f = confirmed fixed-site, m = confirmed mobile, p = I think probably will try it but no confirmation, might not; ? = unknown if will try to observe, but it would sure help if an observation can be made there; blank = probably won't observe, but it would be useful if an attempt could be made; w = weather iffy. After 4:30 or 5 pm, I'll be out of e-mail contact, and after this message, will distribute no more, but before I leave my office, I might update this list on my Web site at http://iota.jhuapl.edu if I hear from more of you about your plans for this. Path maps, finder charts, and other information are consolodated into a new Power Point file, m1707112.ppt, that I will put on my Web site at http://iota.jhuapl.edu by about noon Thursday; it now includes two full-sky charts with iota Aurigae underlined on both of them. Note that the 98% sunlit Moon will be 23 deg. from the target star, lower in the east in western Gemini. But that far from the Moon, in a clear sky, your finder scope should still show 8th-mag. stars, and especially the two 7th-mag. stars that are about 20' from the target star, so the bright Moon shouldn't be too much of a problem. I made an error before - the target star will be about 70 deg. above the eastern horizon, not above the western one. Note that the wide-field view from Preston's Web site shows essentially all of Taurus and Aurigae, and much of Perseus and Gemini, with the Moon shown as a smudge on the left side northwest of epsilon Geminorum. About the path, in my last message, I said: In Maryland, DC, & northern Virginia, you should observe from 0:23 to 0:25 UT Jan. 13 UT (EST Jan. 12, 8:23 - 8:25 pm). As Jeff Guerber pointed out, that's wrong, the UT that is; it should be 1:23 to 1:25 UT Jan. 13 UT (the EST is still o.k., Jan. 12, 8:23 - 825 pm). For all observers in North America, the UT is 1h Jan. 13 and the EST is 8 pm Jan. 12. David Dunham, IOTA, 2 am EST Thursday home dunham@starpower.net 301-474-4722 cell 301-526-5590 office david.dunham@jhuapl.edu 240-228-5609 ____________________ You can help determine the precise size, shape, and orbit of the small asteroid 1707 Chantal if you help us watch a 9.5-mag. star a little south of iota Aurigae early tomorrow evening. The target star should be relatively easy to find, very high (about 70 deg.) above the western horizon, and clear skies are forecast for much of the path, from the Carolinas to eastern New York. Let us know if you can help [observers especially around Allentown, PA (LVAAS); in Maryland's Howard and Montgomery Counties; Fairfax County & Charlottesville, VA; and Charlotte and Greensboro, NC are needed, but observers in other parts of the path, and a little away from it, might also make valuable observations]. In spite of the asteroid's small size, only 10 km, the motion is slow so that a central occultation will last 5 seconds. We need your help to cover the predicted path, and its relatively wide uncertainty zone; if several of us spread across the uncertain zone observe, a few of us can time the occultation to accurately measure Chantal's parameters, and possibly discover close duplicity of the star or asteroid. If you can help us observe this occultation, either from your home or observatory, or as a mobile observer, please inform me and Derek Breit (e-mail breit_ideas@hotmail.com ) so that mobile observers don't waste effort duplicating your observation. For coordinating coverage of this occultation, a list of stations sorted by distance in km from the predicted central line, can be found on Derek Breit's Web site with link below; a subset of his list is below with the locations of observers whom I hope might try this event. If your station is within 138 km of the central line, you can find it in his list to see directly the time of closest approach for your location (which you can also estimate from Steve Preston's maps) probability for an occultation, and other details. I have a few extra video systems that can be loaned for those who want to try to observe this event in central Maryland. The target star, SAO 76774 = TYC 1843-00401-1, should be fairly easy to find, near a couple of 7th-mag. stars in northern Taurus a few deg. south of 3rd-mag. iota Aurigae, at J2000 RA 4h 49m 26.5s, Dec +29 deg. 53' 19". Path maps, finder charts, and other information can be found at the links given below, but for this event, I've consolodated the maps and charts into a Power Point file that you can get near the top of my Web site at http://iota.jhuapl.edu or, directly, at http://iota.jhuapl.edu/exped107.ppt . It includes Steve Preston's map of the path across the eastern USA, a blowup of the path from Charlie Ridgway's site showing the path across Maryland, northern Virginia, and the Washington, DC - Baltimore region, and all of his finder charts except the 30' one. A description of the path is as follows, first what I described before for the DC - Baltimore region, then other areas with times: The 7-mile-wide path roughly parallels I-95 between Baltimore and Washington, but is nominally farther west, passing over Reisterstown, western Howard County, Brookeville, Rockville, and Potomac in Maryland, and Great Falls, Fairfax, and Manassas in Virginia, as well as parts of eastern Penn. (note the time is earlier there - see Steve Preston's Web site for details, link given below), central Va., and western N. Carolina. But the uncertainty is so large that the actual path could pass as far west as Frederick or as far east as Annapolis, MD, so observers throughout the Washington-Baltimore region, across central Maryland, DC, and northern Virginia, have a chance for an occultation. In Maryland, DC, & northern Virginia, you should observe from 0:23 to 0:25 UT Jan. 13 UT (EST Jan. 12, 8:23 - 8:25 pm). The path crosses Labrador, eastern parts of Quebec, n.w. Maine, n. New Hampshire, and southern Vermont, but it will probably be cloudy in those areas, according to the latest Astro Meteo (Clear Sky Clock) forecast. But clear skies are forecast farther south; at 8:20 pm, the path passes over or near Albany, NY; at 8:21 pm, between Newburgh and Jarvis, NY; at 8:22 pm, over Allentown - Bethlehem and to the area north and west of Philadelphia, but could occur in Scranton or n.w. New Jersey; at 8:23 pm, across central Maryland; at 8:24 pm, DC - northern Virginia to Charlottesville; 8:25 pm, central Virginia west of Richmond; 8:26 pm, Danville, VA - Winston Salem, NC region; 8:27 pm, Asheville - Charlotte, NC region; 8:28 pm, n.w. South Carolina; and 8:29 pm, near Augusta, GA. Starting in South Carolina, cloudiness is predicted to increase, but perhaps not hopeless, especially with the high altitude, observers farther south across Georgia and the Fla. panhandle may have a chance - See Steve Preston's Web site. Web sites for this event: Steve Preston, with basic predictions, finder charts, etc.: http://www.asteroidoccultation.com or directly http://www.asteroidoccultation.com/2006_01/0113_1707_7107.htm . Derek Breit's Web site with complete station list (including the longitudes, latitudes, and heights above sea level of the stations): http://www.poyntsource.com/BREIT_IDEAS/index.htm or directly http://www.poyntsource.com/BREIT_IDEAS/Chantal.htm . Methods of timing occultations: http://iota.jhuapl.edu/timng920.htm . You can see the path superimposed on maps and satellite imagery on Charlie Ridgway's interactive Web site that uses Google maps to zoom in for very detailed views. For general information about his site, see http://digitalmagic.i8.com/Astronomy/Occultations/ while just for Chantal, use http://digitalmagic.i8.com/Astronomy/Occultations/06/Asteroids/060113_Chantal.html . Below is an abbreviated version of Derek Breit's list; tomorrow morning, I'll distribute another one with just those who have indicated that they will try to observe this event. As you can see, if half of you try to observe this event, we could obtain very good coverage - please try it if you can. P is the probability for an occultation at the station, U.T. is the predicted time for the location (it should be accurate to +/-0.5 minute; not that the LOCAL EST date is Thurs. January 12 and the EST hour is 8 pm for all). Very detailed maps for these events can be found on Charlie Ridgway's interactive Web page that links to the very detailed maps and satellite imagery of maps.google.com with overlays of the occultation paths. For many of these events, lists of stations sorted by distance from the updated central line are posted on Derek Breit's Web site. You can search for your name, city, or observatory to find the predicted circumstances (star and Sun altitudes) and time of closest approach (concentrate on observing for two minutes centered on that time), as well as for mobile observers to find gaps of the fixed-station coverage to decide the most effective locations for mobile observing. Your station should be included, if it is close enough to the path; send me your location if yours is not included for a nearby event.
