Locating the Flashes on the Moon
An outline plot of the Moon was made including a selenographic grid
at 10( intervals and crater circles whose coordinates and radii were
obtained from the Lunar Prospector Web site. The plot was generated
for the lunar librations at Mt. Airy, MD, at 4:46 U.T. of 1999 Nov.
18, and was copied to a transparency. This was first fitted to a
video image showing large craters near the terminator to determine
the scale and orientation, as shown below. Then, the grid could be
sized and oriented to fit to the edge of the Moon in the view of the
D Impact to the right. In this view, ten frames including the impact
have been averaged, and the result computer-processed to show
intensity variances that enhances the lunar dark limb. The scale of
the two views is different.
